See it in chat, not on a canvas

An emote is never viewed alone. It sits inside a moving line of text at 28 pixels, often doubled, often next to someone else's emote. Drop yours in and read it the way your chat will.

Hover or focus an emote to see the enlarged version, the way Twitch's own hover card works. Everything above is rendered at true size — nothing is scaled up.

Why previewing in context beats previewing on a canvas

A design tool shows your emote on a neutral background at 112 or 512 pixels. Chat shows it at 28 pixels, on a coloured background, inside a sentence, next to a username in a different colour. Those three things — size, background and neighbours — cause most of the "it looked fine in the editor" surprises.

The most common failure is an emote whose silhouette is fine alone but disappears when doubled. HYPE HYPE HYPE becomes a smear of colour with no readable form, because the gaps between repeated emotes vanish once they are this small.

What to check

  • Doubled. Does it still read as one thing when typed three times?
  • Against text. Does it hold its own next to a sentence, or does it read as a smudge?
  • Both themes. Most viewers are on dark, but light theme exposes pale art immediately.
  • The face. At 28px, expression lives entirely in the eyes and mouth.

Questions

Does this upload my emote?

No. The image is decoded, resized and rendered in your browser. There is no upload request and nothing is stored.

Why 28 pixels?

That is the size Twitch chat renders emotes at. The 112px file appears in the picker and on hover; 56px shows up in a few places. Chat — where nearly every impression happens — is 28.

What emote code should I use?

Letters and numbers only, starting with a letter, under 25 characters. Codes are case-insensitive in chat, so pick something that reads as a word rather than an abbreviation nobody will guess.

Run the readability checker for a scored diagnosis rather than just a look.
